Tryna du Toit

Biographical info

The well known South African author Tryna du Toit (the pseudonym of Catherina Charlotte Kotzenberg née du Toit) was born in De Aar, Northern Cape on 13 January 1910. She obtained her teaching diploma in 1930 at the Wellington Training College where she taught until 1932. She started writing at the age of thirty and published her first novel when all three her children were grown.

During her writing career she produced 40 novels and 12 omnibuses with novels like Wag ’n bietjie, Die erfgenaam van La Provence and Donkerpoort experiencing continuous reprints because of their popularity. Her novel Groen koring that deals with the (former) controversial topic of teenage pregnancy, was made into a film but was temporarily banned because of its controversial nature. She produced her last novel Net soos ’n arend at the age of 81.

Tryna du Toit passed away in 2005 at the age of 95 after being in a coma for a year.
