Martie Retief-Meiring

Biographical info

Martie Retief-Meiring became a journalist after receiving a BA degree from Stellenbosch University. She worked for several publications (Die Burger, Die Oosterlig, Die Vaderland and News/Check) where she reported on general, court and political events. She also freelanced for several newspapers and magazines and was the assistant editor of Vrye Weekblad.

During her time spent abroad, she reported for Nasionale Koerante (National Newspapers) as well as for South Africa in London. While there, she was the foreign representative of Nasionale Pers and she also reported on South Africa for the BBC.

Retief-Meiring belongs to several organisations including Business and Professional Women, Women in Media and the Business Johannesburg Women’s Buro. She is also a founding member of Vroue vir Vrede (Women for Peace), Kontak (Contact), the Suidoosterfees and Aardklop National Arts Festival where she holds the position of director.

She is also a writer of short stories and her works have been published in three anthologies. She is also the author of  Elita en haar lewe met FW de Klerk / Elita and her Life with FW de Klerk

Retief-Meiring is married to the architect Hannes Meiring. She wrote the text for his book, My Country in Line and Colour. Their daughter, Karen-Christine (Kabous) Meiring, is currently a publicist for children and youth publications at NB Publishers in Cape Town.
