These poignant short stories are about the young girl Mia’s growing-up years: from 12 years old to a young mother. Set in Cape Town and on the family farm outside Ladismith, the stories give insight into the burden of a family history of alcoholism and depression.
 
There are the complex relationships with her mother and her father, and as she grows older, her relationships with men. During her sexual awakening she ends up in some painful relationships. What turns out to be a healing element in her life (as in her father’s) is the power of storytelling and imagination.
