In 2004 the author’s collection of short stories Tot verhaal kom was awarded the RAU Prize – now the University of Johannesburg Prize. His new collection of short stories Verbeel jou dis somer (Imagine it’s summer) again reflects the complexity of different realities. They are about ordinary people, like the sensitive story about an old street cleaner who loses his job, or the woman whose life changes when she marries a Karoo farmer after having worked in Europe for many years.

Although many of De Vries stories are about the harsh realities of life they are told with an underlying sense and awareness of its beauty.
